Motor yachts are generally any vessel capable of providing overnight accommodations, not intended specifically for fishing, that are propelled by diesel engines. They range in the size from somewhere around 35 feet to 100 or more feet. Vessels larger than this maybe categorized as megayachts or superyachts. The vast majority of motor yachts built today and fiberglass, and unlike trawlers that operate at a slow economical speed; and more often capable of speeds of 20 or more knots. Their accommodations will include two, or as many as four, staterooms, for owner and guests. They also provide a full galley, heads, (all so referred to as bathrooms) and, typically, comfortable outdoor spaces protected by an overhead structure to provide protection from the sun and rain. A flybridge is a popular item on many motor yachts and those vessels are also referred as flybridge motor yachts. Cockpits are also a component on some motor yachts, in which case they may also be referred to as cockpit motor yachts.
There have been numerous technological developments in the design and construction of motor yachts in the last decade. The addition of bow thrusters, stern thrusters, joy stick maneuvering and static positioning, makes maneuvering and docking them a very simple task. They also benefit from the advancement of better communication systems, simpler methods of navigating, and much higher standards of safety, than vessels built in the past.
